How Can Lean Sigma Improve Your Business?

Posted on March 31, 2015September 24, 2024 by Earl K. Miller

Lean or Six Sigma is a set of tools developed to help a business improve its productivity and efficiency. Originally developed within the manufacturing industry but proven to be effective for a variety of different businesses, lean sigma could transform the way your business performs. Lean sigma is a combination of two very influential improvement methods that help businesses improve by designing and closely monitoring processes or activities to ensure that resources are used effectively and waste is reduced.

There are a number of ways that using lean sigma will improve your business, helping to dramatically increase productivity and profit regardless of industry. The benefits are not only seen by your business internally – your customers will also see an improvement in the service and products they receive from you. The more your customers see a rise in the value they get from your business, the more they will continue to bring their custom to you- creating a strong customer base for your business.

Lean sigma can improve your business financially in terms of the amount of money saved through the reduction of wastage and the improvement in operating processes. When processes are perfected to provide the minimum amount of wastage a business will save money because fewer materials are used, less employee time is needed and the risk of customer dissatisfaction and possible returns is reduced.

In addition, a business’ employees will become more effective through the use of lean six sigma techniques. Employees will benefit considerably from the extra training and incentives offered through the execution of the business improvement method, becoming more adept at within their roles and ultimately more valuable to the company. Having a highly trained, skilled workforce is the key to profitability for any business.

Leadership within a business will also be improved when using lean six sigma techniques to evaluate and strengthen its running procedures. In order to successfully implement the improvement methods senior leaders will need to be appointed who can communicate effectively with all team members, overcome reluctance and resistance from other employees, set priorities and allocate resources. Investing in a strong leadership program will benefit your business as the number of employees dedicated to improving performance and overseeing operations will increase.

Lean six sigma methods encourage regular reviews and evaluations of your business and all of its day-to-day procedures. This is a good practice for a business to adopt even once it has finished the majority of its lean sigma implementation. It means that any future problems can be quickly identified and rectified before they seriously affect the business. Possible areas for improvement and areas that are performing particularly well are also more easily highlighted when a business regularly examines its performance and procedures.

In essence, using lean six sigma methods can help you to improve your business by encouraging you and your employees to evaluate and refine processes to make them as efficient as possible. The techniques will help you to save money, improve services and develop a more highly skilled and invested workforce.
