For years, hire generators sat in the same mental category as fire extinguishers: necessary, occasionally expensive and rarely thought about until something went wrong. That has changed. On a growing number of UK projects the constraint is no longer plant or labour but grid capacity, and temporary power has moved off the contingency line and onto the critical path.
The numbers make the case. Applications for demand connections to the transmission network grew by 460% in the six months to June 2025, and waits of up to 15 years have been reported for some classes of project. In February 2026, NESO notified Ofgem that it would probably miss connection obligations for 210 of the 340 projects it had awarded protected status, despite the Gate 2 reforms intended to clear the queue. For anyone working to a fixed handover date, that is not an abstract policy problem but a decision about how the site gets powered in the meantime.
Availability is also more local than most specifiers expect. Fleets sit at depots, and delivery windows depend on transport and how far the set has to travel, which is why a project team in the East of England will usually get a faster response from a supplier offering essex generator hire than from a national broker sub-contracting the work out. Fleet ownership matters too, because it determines who is accountable at two in the morning.
Size for the load profile, not the schedule of loads
The most common and most expensive specification error is oversizing. Add up every connected load, apply a comfort margin, and you arrive at a machine that spends its working life at 20% of rated output. Diesel engines do not tolerate that. Below roughly 30% load, combustion temperature falls, fuel burns incompletely, and unburnt fuel and oil accumulate in the exhaust system, the condition known as wet stacking. Caterpillar advises loading a diesel set to at least 30% of its rating for around 30 minutes in every four hours of light running.
The answer is to profile the load across a day rather than design to the peak. Two 250 kVA sets in parallel, with one shut down overnight, will usually beat a single 500 kVA machine on fuel burn, emissions and engine life, and add redundancy you did not previously have.
Treat fuel as a line item, not a rounding error
Since 1 April 2022, construction and industrial power generation have lost their entitlement to rebated red diesel, moving from an effective duty rate of 11.14p per litre to the full rate. On a long hire, fuel comfortably outweighs the cost of the machine. HVO is now routinely specified by tier one contractors for carbon reporting, though it attracts the same duty and a premium at the pump.
Two things reliably pay for themselves: telemetry, so refuelling is scheduled against actual consumption rather than a driver’s estimate, and properly bunded tanks, which matter for spill liability and for site security once the fuel is worth stealing.
Prove it under load before you depend on it
Commissioning without a load bank test proves that a set starts. It does not prove that it will hold voltage and frequency when a chiller cuts in at three in the morning. Resistive testing verifies the engine, cooling system and controls; adding a reactive element tests the alternator and AVR against the lagging power factor that real plant actually produces. For standby installations in hospitals, data centres and other critical facilities, that distinction is the difference between holding a certificate and having confidence.
Settle the boring details early
Most hire problems turn out to be logistical rather than technical: crane access, rooftop or basement placement, cable routes and terminations, exhaust discharge and noise limits under a Section 61 consent. Acoustically attenuated sets running at around 65 dBA at one metre satisfy most residential objections, but only if the constraint is flagged before the order is placed rather than after the first complaint reaches environmental health.
The direction of travel
Connection reform may eventually shorten the queue, but substations, cables and planning consents still take years, and demand from electrification, housing and data centres is not waiting. Temporary power will carry more of the load, for longer, on more UK sites. The projects that handle it well are the ones that treat it as an engineering exercise at design stage, with a realistic load profile, a costed fuel plan and a witnessed load test, rather than as a phone call made on the morning the power is needed.
